A dating application has introduced a filter for users seeking a partner who also just wants to sit down, following internal research into what people actually do.

The filter has outperformed every existing interest category, including hiking, which remains the most listed and least performed activity on the platform.

“Ninety-one per cent of profiles mention being outdoorsy,” said product lead Ottilie Vane. “Location data indicates they are indoors.”

The Institute for Stated Preferences has long documented the gap between the described self and the observed one.

“Users do not lie on profiles,” said Dr. Ruaridh Blackwood. “They describe a person they fully intend to become, and then meet for coffee as the person they are.”

The new filter permits users to specify a preferred sitting arrangement: a bench, a good chair, or a sofa with a defined end time. A companion filter, Wants to Leave by Nine, is in testing and is expected to be the most used feature in the platform’s history.

Not all reaction has been positive. One user complained the filter removed all sense of aspiration from the process.

He was then matched, within four minutes, with someone who felt the same way.

They have agreed to meet. Neither has proposed a walk.
