New iPhone Displays Three Live Activities at Once, Ending Decades of Displaying Two

Analysts call the third slot the most consequential change yet to a region of the screen most owners have never deliberately looked at.

Apple announced the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max on Tuesday, among whose improvements is a smaller Dynamic Island capable of showing three Live Activities at once, rather than two.

The Institute for Incremental Progress describes the third slot as the most consequential development of the year in a part of the display that most owners have never intentionally examined.

“Users cannot currently name the two activities they have,” said Institute director Dr. Ottoline Fairweather-Ncube. “They will shortly be unable to name three. The capacity is real. The demand is a separate question.”

The Pro models start at $1,199 and $1,299 respectively, roughly a hundred dollars above last year. The Bureau of Justified Expenditure notes that the specification sheet plays no part in the decision.

“Nobody upgrades because of the chip,” said Bureau analyst Dr. Emeric Sandoval. “People upgrade because their phone did something strange on a Tuesday. The specifications are retrieved afterwards, as supporting documents.”

The main camera now offers a variable aperture, with manual control over aperture and shutter speed. Institute research indicates these controls will be operated by a small fraction of owners, nearly all of whom already own a camera and are not the ones being marketed to.

Storage reaches two terabytes for the first time, which the Bureau describes as provision for owners who intend, at some point, to begin filming something.

Four colours were announced. One is called glacier. One is called burgundy.

“The colour is the only specification a person will describe to another person unprompted,” Fairweather-Ncube said. “Everything else is recited when asked, in a flat voice, from memory.”

The physical design is unchanged from last year, leaving the back of the device to carry the visual argument on its own.

Pre-orders open Friday. One prospective buyer, contacted while refreshing a page that was not yet live, was asked what was wrong with his current phone.

“Nothing,” he said. “That’s not the point. It’s been two years.”

As of press time, no owner had successfully identified a second Live Activity, let alone a third.
