Debutant Hits Nine Sixes, Takes Four Wickets, and Is Now a Problem for Everyone Senior to Him

Observers report he appeared to bat and bowl at the same time. This is not possible, and it is nonetheless what happened.

A twenty-one-year-old fast bowler named Razaullah made his Test debut at Edgbaston on Friday, took four wickets in England’s first innings, then walked out with Pakistan eight down and facing defeat and scored 81 from 63 balls with nine sixes.

It was the fastest fifty by a Pakistan player on Test debut. The nine sixes equalled the record for any player on debut in the format. The ninth-wicket stand he anchored turned a lost position into a lead.

Observers report that he appeared, at moments, to be batting and bowling simultaneously. The Institute for Seniority Studies concedes this is not physically possible and declines to revise the description.

“One job is a contribution,” said Institute director Dr. Ottavia Lindqvist-Mbeki. “Two jobs is a comment.”

Institute modelling identifies the difficulty precisely. In a structure ordered by seniority, a debutant outperforming everyone above him creates what researchers call an arithmetic problem: the averages must now be read in an order nobody in the room enjoys.

Senior players are understood to have applauded at length, in a manner the Institute characterises as sincere with an undertone of arithmetic.

The Institute’s model — which describes the genre rather than any actual proceeding — anticipates the standard sequence. The player is celebrated for four days. By the second week he is described as raw. At a moment of maximum inconvenience he is rested, for his own development.

“Rested,” Lindqvist-Mbeki said. “The word has never once meant rested.”

Researchers stress that no such step has been proposed, announced, or hinted at by anybody, and that the model is a description of institutional reflex, not evidence of one. It simply notes that systems of this kind have historically found excellence in a junior harder to process than failure in a senior, because failure confirms the order and excellence disturbs it.

“Nobody convenes a meeting about a man averaging nineteen,” Lindqvist-Mbeki said. “That is the safest thing you can do here.”

Razaullah is twenty-one. At the current rate of progression, the Institute projects that he will be called a veteran by twenty-four and held responsible for something by twenty-six.

Until then, he has the highest strike rate in the building and no seniority whatsoever, a combination the Institute describes as “temporarily unbeatable.”
