Company Beats Expectations It Set Twenty Minutes Earlier
Executives describe the result as a triumph of discipline and, separately, of arithmetic.

A firm has announced that it has exceeded expectations, having established those expectations twenty minutes prior to exceeding them.
The revised target was circulated at 9:40 a.m. The results were published at 10:00 a.m. and beat it by four per cent.
“This reflects disciplined execution,” said chief executive Aurelio Banks-Mendez of the fictional firm Corvid Holdings, “and a very carefully chosen number.”
The Institute for Expectation Management reports that guidance now functions primarily as a mechanism for generating good news.
“Set the bar where the foot already is,” said Dr. Perpetua Danforth. “Then announce that the bar has been cleared. This is not deception. Everyone involved understands the arrangement, including the analysts, who are paid to be surprised.”
The company’s presentation described the quarter as challenging in paragraph one and outstanding in paragraph two, a construction the Institute calls the mandatory pivot.
Its slide deck contained a chart with no vertical axis, which Danforth identified as the single most reliable indicator that the underlying figure is small.
Analysts responded positively. Three raised their outlook, one lowered it, and one asked what the company does, a question that was noted and taken offline.
