A reply-all chain now in its third day has developed distinct factions, a mediator, and an unofficial historian.
The original message, sent to four hundred and eleven recipients, concerned a chair that had been moved.
“The chair belongs on the fourth floor,” the message read. It did not ask a question.
Within nine minutes the chain had produced its first faction: recipients replying all to request removal from the chain, thereby extending it. The Institute for Distributed Correspondence identifies this as the primary growth mechanism.
“Nothing sustains a chain like people trying to leave it,” said Dr. Auberon Wexley. “Each departure is announced to everyone.”
By day two, a second faction had emerged: the humourists. Eleven people independently replied with a variation of the same joke, each believing they were first, and each receiving diminishing appreciation.
Day three produced a formal apology from a senior figure asking that the matter be taken offline. This was sent to all four hundred and eleven recipients and generated ninety further replies.
The chair has been located. It is on the fourth floor. It has been there throughout.
The historian has archived the chain and describes it as the most complete record of the organisation’s culture ever assembled.
